The Ukrainian Air Force has acquired a fleet of specialized vehicles to operate and maintain its F-16 fighter jets in dispersed locations—a crucial step in response to the constant threat of Russian attacks.
The new equipment includes mobile workshop trucks, cranes for loading munitions, and a mobile command post for mission planning. Developed in collaboration with the Come Back Alive foundation, the industrial group Office 61, and the state-owned Ukrnafta, these vehicles allow Ukraine to maximize the use of its Western fighter jets even without fixed infrastructure.

The initiative reflects the challenges of operating modern aircraft in a wartime scenario where airbases are prime targets. Ukrainian F-16s have already been used in air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, equipped with AIM-120 and AIM-9 missiles as well as GBU-39/B precision-guided bombs. However, the need for mobility is so critical that, according to reports, these jets may remain at secondary bases for only a few hours at a time to avoid enemy strikes.
Ukraine’s experience has directly influenced U.S. military planning, which is shifting strategies to prepare for high-intensity conflicts—such as a potential confrontation with China in the Pacific. Concepts like Agile Combat Employment (ACE), which emphasizes rapid and distributed air operations, are being refined based on Ukraine’s lessons. The U.S. is also advancing development of Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) drones, designed to operate in dispersed environments from the outset.
The war in Ukraine has highlighted the vulnerability of aircraft on the ground, reinforcing the importance of mobility and streamlined logistics. With its new vehicles, Ukraine can quickly reposition ground support assets, boosting the survivability of its F-16s. Meanwhile, Western forces are already reviewing their equipment, seeking lighter and more versatile solutions for future combat scenarios.
